NERstar tool presented at the 8th International Symposium on Live Subtitling and Accessibility

A tool used in EASIER was presented at the 8th International Symposium on Live Subtitling and Accessibility. The event held in Barcelona on April 19, 2023 showcased the latest trends and developments in live subtitling and accessibility fields.

NERstar is a tool developed by Juan Martínez from SWISS TXT, one of the EASIER project partners. The tool allows a quick and effective application of the NER model to subtitles. One of its most significant advancements is the integration of sign language input, which is used to record sign language videos and automatically underline them with time stamps. NERstar has been tested in EASIER as an evaluation tool, which helps to ensure the accuracy and quality of the output generated by project assets. By enabling human post-editors to review and assess the generated machine translation of spoken language text, such as glosses for sign language or subtitles, NERstar is instrumental in achieving project goals.

The well-received presentation of the NERstar tool at the Symposium on Live Subtitling and Accessibility highlights the growing interest in developing innovative solutions for accessibility in live subtitling. With the continued evolution of technology and transdisciplinary collaborations, the live subtitling and accessibility community is making strides towards providing a more inclusive experience for all viewers.
